James eventually created over thirty architectural follies at Las Pozas, including the eye-shaped tub (pictured opposite), which he sunk into a patch of ferns, banana plants and heliconia species, and the site’s circular main entrance—known as the Queen’s Ring, pictured above.

The Stairway to the Sky, pictured above, is perhaps the best example of what James himself called his “pure megalomania.” It has presented conservationists with a conundrum over how to maintain its charming decayed grandeur while ensuring its concrete remains strong enough for visitors to climb.
